The Superior Health Council is the scientific advisory body of the Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment. It forms a bridge between the Belgian authorities and the scientific world in all public health related issues.

Thanks to its vast network of experts, the Council provides advisory reports and recommendations that are objective, independent and scientifically based. It does so on request or on its own initiative.

The Superior Health Council celebrated its 160th anniversary in May 2009! A study that was carried out on this occasion shows how its role has evolved over the years and how diverse the issues it has dealt with have been. In this age of hyper specialisation, the Council is organised in such a way as to ensure that its functioning is modern in every respect (its current network consists of around 500 experts, 200 of whom have been officially appointed).

For several years now, the Council has been contributing actively to the development of the european EuSANH network (European Science Advisory Network for Health).
